16V Lifters ticking?

I over-advanced my ignition timing by a few degrees the other day, and my lifters started making a ticking noise when I start the car for a few minutes.  Why would advancing the ignition timing make the lifters tick?  Or is it completely unrelated?  I'm gonna set it back tonight to see if they still tick, but I just wanted to get anyone's input first.  Thanks.
