Annoying shift linkage problem.

OK, my first gear seems to be in the right place, but second gear isn't just straight back from first - more like a bit to the right and then straight back.  This makes quick shifting impossible (the faster you shift, the more chance that it will just get hung up).  Anyone ever have this?  It's strange, cause 1st gear is perfect.  But not 2nd. ???
