Yeah, well, I started thinking like you do, being logical and all.  I tried to centerpunch and
drill rivets from the diff side, the side where the rivets have a dome shaped head.  I got the
heads off but could NOT beat them out.  I renewed my efforts by drilling from the ring gear side
(which is easier anyway) and with an expected amount of poundng, they came out.  Didn't make much
sense, but it worked.  Go figure.
