Glad to hear the props for Mobil. Next question: what grade for winter driving? I'm in MD, btw, and we got some good snow last winter. Although, by this winter, I hope to have something cheap, reliable, and more suited to winter driving so I can park the rocco when bad weather hits. I don't want to drive it 100 miles to/from work in snow. Too many idiots out there. Mike's rule of driving: assume every driver (but me :) is a complete idiot and expect the worst and stupid mistakes (driving errors) to happen. Which actually conflicts with one of my other rules of life: Expect nothing and you'll never be disappointed.

I have used Valvoline Full Synthetic for years, but don't think they make a 20w-50 in synthetic.
The caution against 10w-50 MAY have been in non-synthetic context....I can't remember. I wouldn't worry too much about the Mobil. You've had good luck with it, then keep using it.

I've been using Mobil 1's 15w50. Haven't had any problems. Do they make a 20w50? If so, my local Walmart doesn't seem to have it. Are there recommended brands of synth?

Try going with 20w-50 full syn.
I've read that >30 points difference between the first number and the second is NOT a good idea.

Nope, 5w50 full synth.

Ah, forgot to mention that the oil light stays on after the engine is
running, hydro lifters clattering. It does this only after the car has sat for at
least 12 hours. Just about anything less and the light goes out as soon as
the motor kicks in, everything sounds normal.
About the only thing I can think of off hand is maybe the backflow or
check valve in the filter is weak, allowing the oil to seep back into the pan.
