engine swap shops -South Jersey

I cannot do the work myself, Kevin. I do not have garage, special tools, a
lift, a place to keep the car while it is being worked on. Where the car is
parked now - you can't kneel down on the pavement it is so course and jagged
,it can cut you up. I could borrow a one car garage for a few weeks , but
that's it. I would love to do the work , but I would only be a helper, as I
am inexperiened. Everytime I tried to work on my previous sciroccos there
was always a certain bolt that I couldn't get off, or certain tool I didn't
have. so, i don't have the time or facilities. I live near the NJ shore so,
it is far from other listers in the Philly region. I was recommended do an
8V p&P head on a ABA. I would be willing to pay to have someone come do the
work, once I have gathred the motor and other parts needed, etc. Anyone
interested in spending a few saturdays over here? I already spent $500 on a
tow and shop work to get it running right. It resulted in absolutey nothing.
It still doesn't start. So once the car gets towed to a location I want
everything done and running good.
NGP's price sounded fair for $5K, but then what about performance upgrades.
I want to buy other stuff and also need some paint and body repair . In the
end, I will have spent $10K on a car worth $1500 that no one wants to buy
when I have to sell.
I know. I have a friend that won waterfest 1st place years ago. His
scirocco is still sitting in his garage in the same condition
(motor/restored/kitted) . He spent 15Gs on the car and now won't get half as
much back..so i am on a budget, like the rest of you. I am not cheap, it's
just that this is a side project and I just bought a new car for daily
driving and I am tapped out for a while. ...

A MK1 is fun to drive all the time. I'm sure there will be many, including
me, that think you should find a way to do the work yourself. I wouldn't
pay someone to do the brake conversion. You should be able to save a little
that way. If the $5k included a tranny with a bolt kit and new seals, a low
mileage ABA with a knock sensor, all new shifter stuff and the 16v brake
conversion, then the price is not too evil. On the other hand, you could
get a JH short block for next to nothing, buy a 020 5 speed, spend some
money on a p&p head, 4-2 manifold and nice exhaust, and just vented rotors.
That might save you about $2k.

Hello all.
This autumn, I plan on getting the 1.6L (does not run) replaced with
whatever engine combo you suggest will make this stock 1979 Scirocco quick
and fun to drive. I live in southern New Jersey, USA. Does anyone know of
someONE or a some experienced reputable shop in my area that can help me
with the following situation??

I thought it may be easier to start by buying someone else's project for
sale, but this car I recently purchased has 35,000 original miles on it and
, besides some minor collision damage, requires no restoration work (no
rust), near perfect interior. The car is like a time capsule. New German
Performance quoted me a $4-$5K fr a complete A3 2.0L ABA motor conversion
(intake, e.c.u., 5 speed trans, clutch, 16v scirocco brakes). In reality I
can expect this quote to go over budget by maybe one thousand dollars...Then
what about all the fun stuff.. wheels, suspension , accessories.. $$$$$$$ !!
As Scott Williams told me, $5000 for 115 HP is not worth it.

What should I do with this car?

Eric L
