PP backing plate necessary?

All my manuals show a backing plate between the pressure plate and the bolts that hold it
to the crank.  There wasn't one there when I took the clutch/pp assembly off.  So, did
the previous owner forget to install one, or are they only spec'ed for certain trannies?
