Those clamps can indeed be frustrating/infuriating.
McMaster-Carr sells a very nice tool just for these. The money is well spent.

AH, no worries, I found the problem, "lack of continuity" near the plug on the
yellow/red wire (aka wire dangling in thin air, broke at a spot I hadn't
noticed was weak) So it's fixed, and nearly burped, it's behaving temp-wise,
and consumed about a litre of fluid this am, so that's likely the bubble I was
seeking. But thanks to those who replied. Oh, and :) :) :) :) (that's me
driving the beast again, doesn't take me long to remember why I'm nuts about
this car...)
Oh, did I tell you how much fun the water pipe is to do? (it would have been
cake except for the %#^#_%#$ spring clamps. I just love them more than nearly
