(ot)passat 2.016v

having an odd problem with my passat
it is making a heavy clunking.
it only does it for the first 20 minutes of driving.
and it only happens when at more then half throtle.
it goes away when i push in the clutch to change
gears.  

i checked all the half shafts, and wheel bearings and
they are in working order, so i know it is not them.

to me it sounds engine related, i just changed to oil
yesturday and found no bit of metal, i hope its not
the bottom end coming apart.

anyone have any ideas as to what i could check, or
inspect to find out the problem
