Will MKII seats fit in an MKI?

I put 88 16V front seats in my 81, and just had a welder cut the center 
rails from the 81's and weld them on the frames of the 88's. Then I just 
had to bolt on the 81 seat belt latches. It made the finished height of the 
seat bottom cushions a bit higher, which would not work for tall drivers, 
but it was perfect for me.
