In the procees of a motor swap, didn't pay close enough attention to the

intermediate shaft position and distributor and rotor positions so now
I'm
second-guessing myself. Here are the stats, 82 Scirocco, 1.7L to later
model
1.8L hydro (from a cabby I assume), hoping to retain all original
injection
and ignition including dual vaccum advance distributor. Where should the

indicator mark on the distributor housing as you look from above be
pointing
and where should the rotor be pointing at TDC? Also, I can run this
older
style ignition with this motor, correct? Also, this motor came out of an

Scirocco parts car and ran fine so it was swapped in before I got it, so
am
I correct in assuming this is still a 1-3-4-2 firing order?

Yes, almost all 4 cyl are 1-3-4-2 and the 1.7L distributor fits... If
you have the 1.8l distributor, you can easily splice in the 3 wire
connector.

An 8V engine has 2 different TDC points depending on where it is on the
cycle the distributor will point to 1 or be 180º out...

With the distributor rotor pointing to 1, cylinder 1 and 4 have the
pistons all the way up, as you rotate the engine 180º piston no. 3 and 4
come up, and at 360º the 1 and 4 come back up, but this time it's piston
no. 4's turn to be pushed down and the distributor will point to no.4.


How I properly set up an 8V engine; setup the timing pulleys properly
and have the engine at TDC, then set the distributor rotor so that it
points to no.1, fire it up, and use a timing light to set the engine to
6º BTDC.

As long as you change the distributor, the engine doesn't care which TDC
it is set to.
