universal accel coil

Done it and it will work (especially on the non electronic GTI stuff--CIS-E
stuff is a little more sensitive to resistance and such so I would be more
leery).  A friend of mine did this on his 84 Scirocco (same setup as GTI)
but I don't think he really felt a huge difference.  So, it will work and
will probably help the spark and you might be able to open the gap on the
plug some for a more efficient burn but I don't think you'll feel much, if
anything, with the butt dyno!
