What do used cylinders look like? was: Runners on 2.0 vs. 1.8,16v



Used (and this depends upon the miles they were used FOR) pistons will have crowns with a thin black crust on them.
  If you see clean aluminum, you "gots trouble".

  They should not be too shiny, they should show the results of burning
  hydrocarbons in the cylinders.

  A slight brown residue should be OK.
