Got oil cooler, now what size fitting?

8AN won't fit the threads a a BPT (british pipe thread) ask Patrick he just
did this not to long ago.

The thread on the cooler is the size of a 1/2" bolt, so does that mean -8
AN, or do I need some sort of Flare-to-Pipe adapter piece first?  Which
reminds me, what exactly are these for?  Are AN threads different than pipe
threads?
