Engine/tranny Question
Welcome aboard, Ed. I am somewhat dismayed that your Scirocco is destined to become a "winter beater", but that may change after you devote some blood, sweat, tears, and cash to it....:) You may end up selling the Mazda and the Lotus to buy a REAL winter car, something like an old Subaru....
I shall now revert to the old, cynical self that the other listers know and love so well:
250hp is unrealistic unless you have a $10K budget. Half that (hp) is far more doable (with an 8V) and you will be pleased with the result. If you want "big" performance, concentrate your efforts on a crisp 8v and taking all the weight out of the car that you can.
Good luck!

Subject: Engine/tranny Question
Hey List,
I just signed onto the list.
My scirocco (85 8v) has been sitting in the yard for the past 4 years, as
I have been using other cars. I have a 93 RX-7 and an 83 Lotus Esprit.
Now Im ready to tackle getting the scirocco restored and back on the road.
I miss driving it, and would like to make it my winter driver, because the
RX-7 slides all over the road in snow and ice, and the Esprit needs some
work itself.
My main problems with my 85 are that the tranny keeps slipping out of
5th, and the 8v engine just doesnt cut it for the places I drive. (
ie...your basically taking your life in your hands trying to drive in
NYC without any "pickup" - completing with taxis and SUVs.
So Id like to find out who has gotten 250hp or more out of their rocco and
how this can be done with another engine. Can anyone give me any ideas of
what can be transplanted in the car (engine + tranny combo) that will
fit without too much "slicing and dicing" of the car?
Thanks for the time,
Ed (in NJ)
