Temp gauge?

Hi all,

I recently bough an '85 Scirocco.  When I start it up, the red LED in 
the temp gauge flashes.  The temp continues to go up about 2/3 of the 
way.  Then, the temp stabilizes and the red LED stops flashing.  The 
car seems to drive fine and the other temp gauge (in the center 
console) seems OK.  Is this normal?  If not, please help!

Also, the odometer and tripometer stopped rolling, but everything else 
in the dash works (like the tach & speedo).  Someone told me that the 
gears inside might need rebuilt as they sometimes break.  What is the 
process for getting the speedo out of the car and who can rebuild the 
gears?
