Sure, the body kit is what vw put on the 16 valve models to jumpstart
the consumer market. Basically, just putting a faster engine in the car
wouldn't build enough consumer interest for an older car so the body kit
updated. See links below.

body kit. All it adds is the skirts around the bottom of the car and
the fender flairs. I really like the look. But if you look at my car
(http://www.uberzip.com/images/rocco_nov.jpg) you can see they don't
need body kits to look nice. Just some wheels and lowering will do the
trick.

The only other big visual differences in the cars are that some 8 valves
had smaller spoilers on the back as you can see in the top link. If you
look at my car you will see that I and several others have put the
later, big spoiler on.
