If anyone needs/desires to separate the door mirror metal base with the =
plastic housing, here is how I did it:
After removing the glass, motor and wires, you have two spring =
connections. A metal frame is attached the housing to hold the springs =
in place with notches. This is on the outer side of the mirror. On the =
inner (base) side, the springs attach to "elbows" that attached to the =
base with pins. The trick is to hold the mirror and base apart, secure =
the springs and knock out the pins.=20
It is easiest when either the base or the housing is secured to a bench. =
Unfold the base and housing from each other, secure the springs by =
locking needle nose vice grips onto the elbows through the holes in the =
metal frame inside the housing and knock out the pins.=20
Hold the springs tight when releasing the vice grips or they will =
contract with a great deal of force and may come out of their notch. Not =
good, because you can not get them back on the notch with the interior =
frame installed and that frame is melted onto posts in the housing. Good =
news, you can knock off the melted piece of the post and secure the =
frame with screws to the remaining lower portion of the posts. At least =
I could on mine. The posts are hollow so the right size screw is =
important.
Assembling is reverse. This time you have to stretch the springs with =
pliers to get the vice grips on the elbows. I used flat nosed pliers and =
held tight! Do not let the pliers slip or the springs may come off the =
notches.

Rob, I will just be swapping out the glass as Mike suggested however, =
I would like to take you up on your offer and read the gory details on =
how to dismantle this piece. Also, there might be others out there with =
the same interest. =20
Thanks, Rick K.=20

Rick,
=20
I have pulled the glass and motor apart. Easy. I have also separated =
the plastic casing from the metal base. Trickier getting it back =
together than apart.
=20
I can go into detail if anyone is interested.

=20
I just sourced a perfect condition, passenger side, electric =
controlled side view mirror to replace the non reflective one I have =
now. Only one minor challenge, it is red and my car is black. The =
front, or forward half of the mirror case is red, the rest of the outer =
case is black. It also looks like it only painted and that the case is =
actually back plastic underneath. Can this, forward half of the mirror =
case come off easily? If so, I would just take off the red paint with =
some chloride paint stripper to show the black plastic. =20
The final option would just be to paint it with some black =
SEM paint.
=20
Thanks, Rick Kellner.
