It's not any one thing, it's the whole package, the intent, the
'flava'. 

One thing to remember is the timeframe and demographics: lots of A3
Jettas are paid off now and/or are cheap enough for purchase or hand
me downs to 'kids' coming into their time to drive, hence the overly
adorned, more-show, less-go attitude.

OTOH A1 VWs have been around so long that no self-respecting parking
lot pimp (I am focusing on school yard parking lots here) would know
to even deal with one, unless they had a handy wrench around to mentor
some sense into them.
