The tranny saga continues...
The small bearing on the pinion shaft is the same as the inner rear wheel
bearing. So, you can get it almost anywhere.
But, as you point out installing it (not to mention getting the old one off
the pinion shaft) takes a bit of work and some special tools.
Unfortuneately you cannot setup the pinion bearing preload independent of
the case. The pinion shaft and the bearings need to be setup in the specific
case you intend to use. No way around it.
If you are in the Maryland area I could setup your pinion shaft preload for
a nominal fee. I suspect there are a few others on the list that could also
assist.

Subject: The tranny saga continues...
Many thanks to those that suggested the leather belt trick to get fifth
gear off of my tranny. It worked like a charm. After several weekends of
disassembling I am finally ready to begin reassembling my tranny and car...
That is after I find all of the parts. The small bearing on my pinion shaft
is in very rough shape but the process for replacing it sounds pretty
complicated... pre-tensioning, shimming, use of a torch, etc. Does anyone
know of a reputable vendor that stocks reconditioned pinion shafts? If the
cost isn't prohibitive I'd rather just buy another than have to ship it off
somewhere and wait ages for it to come back. Thanks.
