too much oil!?

I never had any over fill problems before, however over the years mechanics 
have said to much oil can cause foaming in the crankcase and increased oil 
pressure. My buddy had a mercury lynx he to much oil in and it caught fire 
bout three days later, don't know if there is a connection though, he seem 
to think there was. I think I would just pop open the drain plug for a sec 
and drin out the excess.
