AMSOIL oils
I can say this about AMzoil; I put the 20-50 in my '87 about 8K miles ago.
It is expensive. I figure that, in order to make it cost-effective, it will
have to last about 25,000 miles. I did send in a sample at 5K for an oil
analysis, which came back stating the oil still has sufficient additives to
be good for another 5K. Now, if I send in a sample every 5K ($15), to
verify that the oil is still "good", I will ALWAYS be spending more than if
I just put fresh, high-quality mineral/synthetic mix in every 5K. (I have
always used 4qts Valvoline 20w-50 Racing/1qt Valvoline Full Synthetic
10w-30) AND will still have very old oil in the engine. Plus, the oil
pressure the last several thousand miles seems to be gradually dropping.(old
oil?)
I will change the AMzoil in another two thousand and put the Valvoline mix
back in.
The AMzoil did not give me any tangible benefits; gas mileage, power,
quicker starts, quieter engine, etc.
(I also put the AMzoil gear lube in the gearbox at the same time the oil
went in the crankcase)
It just costs more.
How it compares to another synthetic, such as Red Line, I cannot say.
