In the bay area, even in the down economy, that's a "starter home", 
and you're lucky to get onto the good side of the tracks in that
price range!  Hell, median home price in Palo Also was $956k in about
'99, and that city ain't nuthin' special, just middle-class America
(w/a few yuppies w/money and dot-bombers thrown in to drive prices
out of the stratosphere).
