sparks out the tailpipe?

  a friend of mine has a 16v jetta gli. last week it started shooting sparks 
out the tailpipe when it was given gas. figuring the engine was done for he 
replaced it with a spare 16v motor he had laying around. last night we 
started the tear down on the old motor to rebuild it. everything looks good, 
in fact, a heck of alot better then expected for a 220k jetta. so my 
question is where the hell did the sparks come from? the bearings are fine, 
no signs of scarring on the cylinders or cylinder walls, didn't throw a rod. 
we even checked the cat, it seems to be fine. wtf?
