1. The damage is both, actually. First, it is external (obviously) and =
internal because the cause of damage is from the rivets on the =
differntial coming apart. BUT, in my opinion, it is beyond that also =
once you have all of that material floating around inside your trans. I =
would think that you'd be lucky for the bearings to last very long if =
someone just went in and replaced the rivets with bolts. =20

2. I believe that the 16v trans cases are different than the 8v because =
of the size of the input shaft and, I believe, the end caps are =
different. I tried to install an end cap on a AGB trans from an older 5 =
speed 8v trans and it didn't work. I can't remember why but it didn't.

3. If I were you, I would install the 2Y and install your 100mm =
flanges. I am pretty sure they will work but I can't remember for sure. =
You may have to clearance the trans a little to install the flanges. =
Now, I have heard and don't see any problem with installing 90mm CV =
shafts either on the inner part of the shafts or to just install 90mm =
shafts complete. I have heard that the 90s work better for tight =
cornering like autocrossing but the 100mm CVs are better for straight =
forward accelerating like drag racing. None of this axle stuff have I =
had personal exerience with, only heard about it from reputable sources.

Go to your local wrecking yard and check the codes on all the trannies. =
I have had great luck at finding this trans in other cars as well as =
GTIs and early Sciroccos. =20

HTH!!

I finally got to tearing my tranny out today and I found the bad =
news...a nice hole on the inside of the bell next the dif =3D(.=20
  OK, here comes the questions.

  1. Is it damage only to the housing, or is it internal as well? =
(please oh please let it only be external)
  2. If it is only external can I use the housing from a 2y of FF to =
repair and=20
save the tranny? I have both laying around.
  3. Is one of these housing better suited for the job?

Please help me save my beloved 4k!!!
(on a side note I have a nice lightened flywheel to be going in =
while the tranny is out WooHoo!!!)
         Thanks,
               Randy
