[tech]: cam timing questions?

so i'd like to tune this new head a little better. disappointingly, a p&p 
head, .012" decking, and schrick 268/276's is no faster than the old 1.8 
head with eurocam, though it FLYS above 5k rpm. i use a strip of road, 
rolling start at 20mph. old setup did this strip at ~63mph, which is the 
same as the new setup (a2 gti vr6 did it at ~69 mph).

i'm trying to dial it in a bit better, get a bit more low end. i have an 
adjustable cam gear, and had some questions. i assume i want to advance cam 
timing for low end (how much?).  also, the shaved head means i need to 
advance by ~1' to compensate i've been told.  for some reason, i'm having a 
hard time picturing which way i want to move the cam gear.  moving the cams 
1 tooth forward (cw) should advance by 6', right? which means i want to move 
the adjustable gear BACK (ccw), since the teeth on the gear are what move 
during adjustment, while the cams themselves stay stationary at tdc. i'm 
pretty sure this is right, but wanted to double check. tia,
