I agree with both items John said - my tranny has 165k miles on it, and it still acts brand new. Just use some Redline MT fluid...
The shifter mechanism shouldn't need to be replaced, unless the reverse spring is broke - it's a pretty strong mechanism - just give it a little grease maybe.

I'll fix my car, even if I have to replace every part in it... and since the problem will be the last part I replace, I'll have a brand new car when I'm done!
