16v AC removal = high idle?

Ever since I installed the 16v engine into my mk1 I have not been
able to get the car to idle correctly. I did the complete wiring harness
swap (the *entire* car wirirng harness), but obviously I chose to leave out
the AC system... so the AC wiring is just kinda "tucked away" throughout
the car.
If I set the ignition timing to the prefered 6-8 degrees advance and turn the
idle screw all the way in, the engine will idle at 2k rpm or higher. The only
way that I have been able to set the idle is to back off the timing to like
only 2-4 degrees, and then the idle screw will allow the idle to stay at a
consistent 1100-1200 rpm.
(I verified that my idle stabilizer valve is working too...)
** I am wondering if the car *thinks* the AC compressor is operating and thus
causes the engine to go to a higher idle as if the engine was under increased
load?
To all the 16v owners who have removed their AC completely, is this a problem
that you have experienced?
Just a thought... any help on this one would be great!
PS..I believe Cathy is experiencing a similar issue...?
