Odemeter and instrument cluster questions.

I got around to taking my instrument cluster out today
on my 84 to change my dash lights.  My question is
when I go buy replacement blubs, are the blubs held by
the black plstic holder or do I take the bulb out and
buy one the same?

I also knew that it was a good time to fix my
odemeter.  I looked at the Scirocco.orgg tutorial and
Patrick's tutorial, but I am still comfused if myy
problem is the red gear or not because I tested it by
taking the red gear off slightly and when the numbers
were moving it would get stuck at .9 miles.  THis also
happens when I drive.  I also tried with a screw
driver on the lower white gear and it would work fine.
 

Any help would be appreicated
