OT: Question for the Americans
I was going to stay completely out of this, but I'll make one point (I
know I should shutup, but...;) It's long, so if you want to jump to my actual
key statement, just read the last paragraph). Saddam Hussein is smart enough to
have seized and held control in a region known for it's factionalism and violent
response to other's control. Do you really believe he would suddenly become
stupid enough to commit suicide by providing WMD's to terrorist groups for use
against any western country? He (like the rest of us) is well aware that all
his actions are being closely watched. More importantly, even a moderately
tenuous link between him and an attack on a western nation would lead quickly
to his demise. I happen to believe he's smart enough to stay as far away from
that as possible.
Of much more concern are his neighbours if you believe most of the recent
information publically available. The majority of terrorist acts against the
US by Islamic millitants were by Saudi citizens. The Saudi government is
known to pay the families of those who attack Israel. I don't mean to imply
the House of Saud is funding or supporting attacks against the US, but there
are serious questions they need to respond to here. Al Qaeda members are known
to be hiding in Iran with the government's knowledge and sanction. Draw your
own conclusions. Finally, there are reasonable indications that Saddam Hussein
ordered the assassination of a ranking leader of the Taliban for reasons
unknown. Sounds like he's trying very hard to make it clear he is not part of
the Al Qaeda attacks on the US and in fact opposes them due to the threat they
represent to his regime.
The final piece that I haven't heard adequately discussed in the US media
is that a former UN weapon's inspector (and former US Marine) states very
clearly that based on his activity in Iraq, there is a very low liklihood of
there being substantial biological/chemical weapons. More importantly, there
was no evidence of a substantial nuclear program that had a reasonable chance
of developing a bomb in the near (less than 5 years) term.
I agree that Saddam Hussein is a huge problem that needs to be addressed.
I certainly do not support terrorism (whether by Islamic fundamentalists, Irish
patriots or US militia members such as T. McVey). I think, however, that
'Dubya' should focus on more pressing areas of concern (including Saudi Arabia,
Israel/Palestine, Iran, and the US economy) before he picks up the torch and
continues Daddy's war.
Cheers (and peace :)),
Colin

If you can read this line, you're probably not illiterate.
