"new" 82 Rabbit LS (converting to GTI)

Just bought this car and there are a few things that I am wondering =
about.  First of all the 1.7L has been swapped for a 1.8L JH.  Secondly =
the car runs pretty great except for the fact that it idles warm at =
about1400rpm. I can fix that no problem.  THe car idles rough at about =
800-900 when cold.  Another thing is that if I just drive it nicely (not =
reving the shit out of it like my old rocco) it runs great.  But if I =
drive that shit out of it almost always starts to run like shit right =
away... like its running on three cylinders.  WTH is going on?  If I =
turn it off and let it sit it usually runs fine again.  I would really =
like to drive it like it's supposed to be driven.  Three other things, =
there are no wires going to the throttle switch? ...the fuel pump is =
noticely buzzing loudly while it wasn't before and the fuel filter is =
tiny.  I know in the rocco the fuel filter is huge but this one is =
pretty small.  Was it for the 1.7L?  Should I get a bigger one?  =
Probably doesn't amtter but it doesn't hurt to ask
