pics of the shorn shaft
This is the outer joint, from the looks of it and the way it sheared. When
it was rebuilt the circlip was not installed or the wrong one was installed.
It looks as if it snapped in a jounce position while cornering, at this
point with a missing or wrong circlip the splines would be drawn back out of
the joint. And when straitening out and rebounding the shaft bound at the
weakest point of the shaft, off centering it and breaking at the machined
recessed area for the circlip. That's what it looks like to me. Interesting

to answer some common questions i've been getting, the axle nut is tightened
to bentley's torque specs, the motor in the car is a stock 1.8l 16v motor,
and the shafts came from different suppliers. both shafts broke in close to
the same spot though.
