Amen, brother.

I just chased down this exact problem. The battery light in my car would not
come on when I turned the key, and the voltmeter never got over +12v....I
was running off the battery.

The culprit turned out to be a poor connection between the blue wire on the
alt and the dash at the fusebox. I took the connectors off, cleaned 'em
with a spray de-oxidizer (DeOxIt is my drink of choice), and very carefully,
with a toothpick, put dielectric grease in the plug holes to keep corrosion
from building up again.

Ensure that you don't bridge across any connectors with the dielectric
grease; wipe down the face of the connector well.
