Actually, I don't think mud and water would get in any easier that by using
the stock setup.  I can understand if it is an inch or so off the ground but
if it is just under the edge of the front panel then there actually is some
good to be done as long as you run an air filter.  It's always good to get
cooler air into the intake and even though you can't use ram air into the
sensor plate of a CIS car it seems the excess would go out the stock holes
that are drilled in the box (or the swiss cheese holes done by the owner!).
I did this and kept up on the cleanliness of my K&N and it did seem to help
especially on hotter days when the engine compartment got really warm.
