OT Why are license plates always blacked out?

I do it because I have this urge to follow the crowd.   MOOO!  MOOO!
To bad thats actually mostly true, I saw everybody else does it and thought that I should to.  Of course I suppose a bunch of people who didn't like you, such as a honduh list, could all get your license plate and do crap like call in your license plate as driving in the carpool lane, etc.
