The '87 16V is letting me down.
It's still dying momentarily, only now the "momentarily" is long enough =
to force me to the side of the road for 30 seconds. It still fires =
right back up after and runs as if nothing happened (runs for 10 seconds =
or 5 days.....).
Symptoms: ignition goes dead for from 1/10 second to 30 seconds. Tach =
instantly drops to zero, even though the motor is still turning over =
3000 rpm as it coasts to a stop. All other electrical items seem to be =
unaffected (lights, radio, voltmeter and other gauges, etc.all work the =
whole time) It's random; every three or four days or so it will have a =
fit of this frustrating behavior. Fuel flow seems normal as it usually =
backfires slightly when the ignition kicks back on.....
I've re-cleaned all the grounds in the engine compartment. (even though =
it acted completely different when the grounds were bad)
Installed new fuel pump relay, just in case.
Installed new Hall affect sender.
Installed new coil.
Installed new ignition control unit/module.
Checked and cleaned all connections in engine compartment.
Diagnosed knock sensor unit. (no reported faults)
Battery and alternator are good (consistent 13 - 14 volts)
New ignition switch. (wiggling the key does not cause the dying)
Fuel tank level has no discernable affect, (full or near empty).
Can happen immediately after start-up, cold or warm, or after 20 minutes =
of driving.
I'm getting desperate. (Desperate enough to drive my Chevy van to work =
the last few days....)
Someone on this list has an idea that I haven't been able to think =
of.....and one of those ideas will be IT!
