It kinda sounds like simmilar stuff I had with my 81.
There is a wire that goes from the ingintion to the
coil to tell it that the key is in and the coil can
send its juice. This would overheat on mine due to a
bad and old fuse box. Replaced this wire car started
fine.
Worth a check
