I had this same problem on my scirocco over last summer. Started just as
you said, and got worse and worse. I couldn't see anything wrong either.
Then, pulling into a parking space at work, I heard/felt a huge griding
vibration and a pop. Got out of the car only to see the CV bearings rolling
down the parking lot. The thing exploded, tearing the boot with it. Ended
up gettign the car towed and fixed cause I wasn't near home. Mechanic told
me that the old shaft was the wrong size. Something like a cabrio part #
and the shaft was just a bit longer than it was supposed to be and put too
much stress on the joint until it blew
