Another question

If it's like my car it means that when the owner removed the covers to
replace the timing belt he found they were too warped to reinstall without
clearance issues, so they were shelved.

New ones are relatively inexpensive but just didn't seem useful enough to me
at the time to justify replacing. YMMV.
