Or buy the correct tool for 12 bucks at NAPA. Its not a VW only tool.

My solution was to take a 17 mm bolt put as many 17 mm nuts on it as I
could and then weld the last one to the bolt. A little grinding for weld
flash and you have a 17 mm allen socket.
