Steering play

I want to have a newer feel to the steering in my 85 Scirocco.  It has =
quite a bit of play due to its age and mileage.  Would putting new tie =
rods, ball joints, etc. in help this problem.  I have not worked on =
front end parts much.  If this is not what I need, what would be a good =
place to start?
