I hate my shifter

this is the one thing about vw's that I cant stand. my shifter, even with a 
tt short shift kit and a bushing kit, still feels like shite. I can hardly 
every find 1st and in general, feels like a stick in a bucket of grease. I 
have noticed that there are some bushings not included in a kit, more 
specifically, the rubber bushing in a plate that the main shift rod (the one 
that goes from the shifter to the engine compartment) goes through. what 
about a solid linkage kit? the ones with spherical ends and such. will this 
cure my woes? any ideas? tia
