 Imagine a nice, constant-radius turn.  You are carving around it in your
'roc, on your way to first place in the Watkins Glen GP.  No, problems
right?
Now take that same curve, have the course marshall stand on the side of the
curve, waving you over so that you have to make a jog to avoid some debris
left on the track by your closest competitor.  In the avoidance manuever,
you have to make two, quick, 23degree jinks...a short right-left.  Slows you
down, right?  Disrupts your smooth 'flow' through the turn, no?  Upsets the
process, just a little, but it hurts.
Same with airflow.
