oil temp gauge and HVAC backlight still not working!

ok guys, I'm clueless - all wires for the HVAC and oil temp and ashtray 
light are intact, but they do not work...  the wires for the radio are all 
just hanging there (4 colored wires, 1 radio plug, 1 black wire) and I think 
that may have something to do with it.  Is there a certain wire to the radio 
which needs to be grounded for the rest of the center console to work?
Please help.  Thanks.
