need new engine / misc questions about engine swap
Jason - you'll want to go with a 9A engine (it's more cost effective to go
with just the block (it's been shown that 1.8L head is slightly better for
the low-end), but you said the PO might have beaten on it pretty good so
there's a chance that the head isn't the best condition). It's a 2L 16v
that'll work with EVERYTHING you currently have. If you're inclined to take
the block apart, you can have it balanced at a local machine shop for around
$200, put it back together and it'll be like new. This is what I did and I'm
quite happy with the results.
Just replace all the gaskets, belts (timing definitely, other depending on
condition), clutch (if necessary) with their OEM replacements are you're
ready to go...
For your particular situation, you might want to consider examining the
cooling system before you fix the engine. No sense spending all the time an
effort to get an engine in only to have the cooling system jack it all up.
