There is a difference in early Rabbit (Golf 1), Scirocco, and DASHERs.

Bet you will find this is the answer after all.
I had some of the early ones on my 81 Roc (previous owner) but gave them
away not knowing what I was giving up.

These early types are the ones you can get (poly?) inserts for I think.
