I have been looking at the temp my car runs under normal conditions, it a
little warm for my liking (the needle rides just at the top of the warning
light on my gauge) so I got to tinkering around with things under the hood.
First removed the grill and drove around a while, car ran cooler, this
started me thinking and as I examined what things look like behind the
grill. air flow comes in the grill and the under grill and should pass
through the Rad, then I noticed the huge gaps on either side of the Rad and
thought the air is more likely to flow there
than the restriction of the Rad. So I went up to work, stole a flow meter,
and duct taped it in front of the Rad. and drove around and recorded the
readings. I remounted the meter to the pass side of the Rad in the gap and
drove around. From my un orthodox testing I figure there is more air going
around the rad then through it. So my buddy steve and I cut out some panels
(ok, so they were pizza boxes) to force the air into the rad and taped them
into the car and went driving. There was a huge improvement in operating
temp (the needle rides a whole needles width below the warning light on my
gauge). This weekend the experiment will include making aluminum sheets to
fill the void and make the upgrade official. Just thought you guys could use
this idea for your rocs too, more so for those in the hot south. ;)
