  You are correct in some respects, in error in others.....
To go from 0-100 really quick (not "fast", fast refers to speed, quick
refers to acceleration) you need lots of horsepower.
Fast is a reference to time (usually stated in time/distance...e.g.
miles/hour, feet/second, etc.)
Torque has nothing to do with time.
Torque is a measured value
HP is a calculated value, based on torque and a time factor (rpm).
Take a steam engine; it develops it's maximum torque at zero rpm. Lots of it
(relative to size).
 But, turning zero rpm gives you zero acceleration. You need rpm to achieve
acceleration.
Ergo, you need horsepower.

HP are about top speed.
Torque * RPM = HP

HP is how fast it can go.
Torque is how fast it can go that fast.
Torque is work acomplished, so to go from 0-100 (kms
of course) really fast, you need a LOT of work done,
hense torque.
