Speaking of Hyundai
Well I must confess. I actually own one!!! (sound of needle being dragged
across a record:gasp).
First, let me say, after owning over 24 VW's in my lifetime, It was a hard
decision. I did not want to be part of the yuppie new Jetta brigade, and
although I love the new GTi's and even the TurboS NB the $$$ and VW's corporate
direction left the door open.
I remember seeing the first photos of the new Tiburon thinking damn looks a bit
like a cross between a Ferrari and a Supra/Celica. And remember back a few
years ago the artists rendition of a "New Scirocco/Corrodo"?. The styling
immediatly got my attention. Once the Auto show came, I jumped in one, and
immediately had a Scirocco vibe from the interior. (Note the door pulls,
simple dash, console etc.). Looking at it mechanically, the front suspension
is very VW like, and the rear is independendt similar to a Honda/Toyota.
Engine mounts are easy to get to. And it has Bosch fuel injection.
Anyways. After driving both the 6cyl and the 4cyl, I opted for the 4cyl 140hp
model. Mainly for the following reasons: 1.) Price 15,900 2.) No rear-wing
(IMHO the car looks better without the wing) 3.) No sunroof (less weight)
4.) Less weight over the nose - less understeer 5.) Given the additional
weight compared to an Scirocoo but with the 140hp (vs Scirocco 16v 123), the
HP/Weight ratio feels very similar to my old 16v. Plus the color is also
Alpine White :).
Personally, I love the car. After recent dealings with VW (not good), it
looked like a good choice. I have since driven the car 6000 miles with
extended trips from CLE to Boston-Montreal and Indy. Flawless so far.
At purchase time I poneyed up an additional $800 which extended the B2B
Warranty to match the power train warr for COMPLETE coverage for 10 years 100
miles.
I was looking for a daily driver I could simply drive and not have to maintain
which frees me up to work on my VW projects including the race Scirocco, and my
63 Bug.
Check it out, don't discount Hyundai, they are more true to the old VW feel
than the new VW's. A lot of people will talk trash about their quality, but I
can tell you it is on par-- if not better (since they are building a good rep)
than products coming out of Mexico / Brazil / Ohio / Kentucky. Hyundai has
been selling cars in the US since 1986 and will be around to honor their awsome
warrantee.
