Go look at a new Porsche and you will also see "orange peel".  According to 
the OEMs and aftermarket paint suppliers such as PPG and Sikkens (Akzo-Nobel) 
a certain amount of "orange peel" makes for a more durable finish, resistance 
to chips.

There are extreme cases, however.  Don't know how bad your car was.
