[OT] WindersXP sucks, then crashes.....please help if you can.....
Had a similar issue with Win2000...when the system shuts down Windows writes
the current configuration to the registry and then turns off the computer.
What is happening is that the HDD is using a write behind cache, so Windows
dumps the data out to the drive, and then kills power. However, the drive
has not finished writing the data out of the cache when Windows kills the
power to the drive, which results in a corrupt file.
Win2000 originally had a bug where in write behind cacheing was enabled
automatically, and couldn't be disabled, the setting reverted itself back to
enabled every boot. We lost close to 25 machines in the field to this
before we realized what it was. After bothering MS for a week we got a
temporary patch that worked. One of the Service Packs fixed this issue
permenantly.
In short, disable write behind caching on all drives...it's not needed, and
can cause data corruption.
In your case, it looks like a reinstall is in your future.
